The new cup runs begin soon with FA Cup
extra preliminary round giving a wide range of attractive games on Saturday 17
August (Friday 16 August at Bishop Auckland). Last season none of the local
non-league teams got beyond the second qualifying round, and once the league
teams joined, only Middlesbrough made any progress, with three home ties before
losing to Chelsea.
The Northern League will hope to get a team
or two through the qualifying rounds this season; Spennymoor, West Auckland and
Shildon being the best bets. Unfortunately Darlington 1883 are still excluded. Of the big boys Newcastle are well overdue some success, having never yet featured in A Good Cup Run.
The FA Vase kicks off with its first
qualifying round on 7 September. Once again the stronger Northern League teams
will target Wembley to maintain their grip on the competition following
Spennymoor’s triumph last May.
And this season we may dip into the FA Trophy
as well, with the preliminary round scheduled for 5 October. Darlington 1883
are in this one, but now relative minnows despite being holders as recently as 2010-11
(in a previous incarnation).
